Few things are as frustrating as a car that will not start. Most battery failures are avoidable with a little routine care.

1. Keep the terminals clean

Corrosion on the terminals blocks current flow. Clean them with a baking-soda paste and a wire brush, then apply a little dielectric grease.

2. Secure the battery

Vibration shortens battery life, so make sure the hold-down clamp is tight.

3. Drive regularly

Short trips never fully recharge the battery. An occasional longer drive, or a smart trickle charger, keeps it topped up.

4. Turn off accessories

Lights and chargers left on overnight are the number one cause of a flat battery.

5. Test before winter

Cold weather cuts cranking power dramatically. Have the battery load-tested every autumn.

6. Watch for warning signs

Slow cranking, dim lights and a swollen case all signal a tired battery.

7. Replace in time
